The Prince Đorđe app on a large touch screen: paper notes among photographed autumn leaves on a forest floor, one of them opened, with a close-up of the papers.

Prince Đorđe

A multi-touch app about Prince Đorđe Karađorđević

A multi-touch app at Tikveš Castle where visitors brush away a pile of autumn leaves to uncover stories about Prince Đorđe Karađorđević and the forests around the castle.

Stories under the leaves

The app opens on a forest floor covered in autumn leaves. Visitors brush them aside with their hands to find papers underneath: vignettes from the life of Prince Đorđe Karađorđević, his own notes about Tikveš, the story of the Karađorđević family, and short pieces about the forests of Kopački Rit, from the relict pedunculate oak forest to the floodplain willows.

The leaves are real. We spent a few days at Tikveš Castle, gathered fallen leaves on the grounds, and photographed them one by one for the app.

How we built it

Like Flora, it's a React app packaged with Electron, running on a 60-inch Windows touch table and built for up to five people at once. The more complex animations were made in After Effects.

Getting multi-touch to work reliably with web technology took a lot of iteration. The final app is fast and stays stable however many hands are on the table.

A paper opening: ink spreads across it among the leaves.

Papers open the same way Flora's notes do: a drop of ink spreads into the paper, dries from the rim inwards, and leaves the story behind in sepia.
