A 360° flight over Dubrovnik's Old Town

A 360° VR video that flies over Dubrovnik's Old Town and City Walls, rendered from a photogrammetry model we rebuilt by hand.

A museum in Dubrovnik wanted visitors to see the Old Town the way a drone would: over the rooftops, along the City Walls, out to the harbour and the fortresses.

We made it as a 360° video for VR: a slow flight over the city that visitors watch with a headset, free to look in any direction.

Rebuilding the city

The model started as photogrammetry. Raw photogrammetry of a whole town is noisy: melted roofs, holes, walls that blur into each other.

A frame from the flight: the Old Town's rooftops from low above, rebuilt from photogrammetry.

Most of the project went into heavy editing by hand, cleaning up geometry and rebuilding roofs, walls and details the scan got wrong, until the city held up at close range.

We worked in Rhino and Cinema 4D, and rendered the flight in Unreal Engine.

Over the walls

The flight follows the City Walls around the Old Town.

From there it heads out past the harbour to the fortresses.
